Bafana Bafana players will each receive around R4 million (US $525,000) each plus a brand new Mercedes Benz – if they win the World Cup! But these aren’t the only riches around in this mega sports show.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa is the most expensive sports show in history, to date. The cost of organising the event has almost doubled compared with the previous championship in 2006, while the prize money has increased 1.6 times.
Biggest Prize Money Ever!
The prize fund provided by FIFA for the 2010 World Cup will be US $420 million (R3,208 million). In 2006, it was US $261 million (R2,000 million)
All the competing teams will receive something for their efforts. The winners of the tournament will receive US $30 million - an amount which is equal to the annual income of Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the highest paid players in the world. In 2006, the tournament winners, Italy, received US $19,3 million dollars.
The second finalist team will get US $24 million (in 2006 – US $17,7 million). Third and fourth place winners will receive US $20 and 18 million dollars, respectively. National teams that took places from fifth to eighth will each get US $14 million. Dollars. Those in the ninth to sixteenth grouping will get US $9 million. And those 16 teams who fail to proceed from the group tournaments, will each earn US $8 million.
Above this, all 32 football federations participating in the championship will receive US $1 million dollars in compensation expenses to prepare for the World Cup. Clubs with World Cup players from their teams will receive US $1,600 dollars per day per player.
Play for Pay!
In addition to the prize money from FIFA, participants can expect to get paid by their own federations. For example, if Spain wins, the Federation of Spain will pay its players 550, 000 euros (US $ 674,000 dollars) each. A British victory could bring 450,000 euros (US $550,000 dollars) to each player, the Brazilians and French – 300,000 euros (US $367,000 dollars) , and the Germans – 250,000 euros (US $306,000 dollars).
Bafana Bafana also Score!
Members of the South African Bafana Bafana team are each getting R50,000 (US $6.500) for a match appearance, an additional R120, 000 (US $15,700) for a win or R50, 000 (US $6,5450) for a draw. This deal is over and above the R1 million (US $131,000) incentive offered for the team for each goal in a win or draw.
Spain the most Expensive Team!
Incidentally, Spain will not get the greatest prize money for a victory, but is also the most expensive team on the 2010 FIFA World Cup field. With players such as Andres Iniesta, Xavi Alonso and Sergio Ramos, the worth of the Spanish national team is estimated at 300 million euros (US $367 million dollars).
